TRANSFORM YOUR ROOM IN ONE EASY DIY - WALLPAPER ACCENT WALL

Why Accent Walls?

There are so many reasons why an accent wall is a clever and sophisticated design choice. Also, they are a lot of fun.

Maybe you want to add a little more depth to a small room or one with a “lighting challenge”…

Or maybe just add some oomph to an unexpected space…

Or you want to create some distinct and separate spaces in your living area…

Or there’s an architectural hindrance like appliances, built-ins, doorways, whathaveyou that keep you from taking on the whole room…

Whatever your reason, a brightly colored or boldly contrasting accent wall is a great way to open up a room, add depth, make artwork pop and bring something unexpected into your living space. And add a beautifully patterned, quirky repeat or textured wallpaper into the mix and you’ve created an accent wall that can transform your room or space into an example of high design at its best.

Burke Décor offers a sweet array of attention-catching wallpapers for whatever your style aesthetic might be. We are going to run down some of our most trendy favorites for 2017 below, with some tips on how to incorporate patterns and textures into your accent wall design to maximize the design drama, and minimize the doldrums.

Here are pics of all the featured wallpapers below, but scroll down for more insider information on the wallpaper patterns, the paper quality, the brand story, a sprinkling of design history and some perfect pairings from other Burke Décor products.

What kind of wallpaper accent wall would work best in your living space or office? So many options!

Keep it minimal and modern, (but never safe)

A crisp pattern is a great way to add dimension to a less fussy, more organically modern room. A simple line print won’t detract from the other elements you have so carefully assembled, but will add depth and intrigue. Using a high contrast black and white, or a slightly glamorous navy and gold will provide a dynamic balance that complements your furniture, plants and artwork, without adding visual clutter to your surroundings.

Nixon Wallpaper by Ingrid + Mika for Milton & King

Burke Décor has plenty of modern options, including this beautiful and exquisitely functional Scandanavian Nixon wallpaper design from Ingrid + Mika, Milton & King’s latest collection. Its clean line work evokes for us the sense of blueprints, feathers, chevron prints or pared-down landscapes.

Milton & King is an Australian boutique wallpaper manufacturer that is devoted to fine craftsmanship in all its products. They collaborate with some amazing studios and artists to create some really elegant wallpaper designs, as well as some very whimsical ones. While we adore the Ingrid + Mika collabo, we’re also partial to City Scape in Night (under a stairway, maybe?), Bear & Squirrel (ultimate unisex nursery wallpaper option), and the Cactus in Red Day (for a really fun accent wall in a powder or laundry room, maybe?). But we digress. Back to the Nixon print…

This wallpaper print would work fabulously with some earthy tones and warm wood finishes, in a minimal or Nordic-inspired dining room. The Nixon pattern would work best when you create a harmonious balance between the walls and other design elements in your space. If you tamp down the bright colors and metallics, some organic natural pieces and plants would maximize the airiness and lightness that this pattern generates.

Or in a differently styled setting, it would keep attention focused on your carefully curated artwork, patterned window treatments or upholstery. We could also picture it looking striking with a deliciously soft jewel toned sofa and an intentionally scuffed up brass and matte-black lamp.

And it could be completely jaw-dropping in an office setting with juicy, primary colored powder coated furniture and young, vibrant artwork.

Lines – Ferm Living

Ferm Living Lines Wallpaper - modern wallpaper

This beauty from Scandanavian design pros at Ferm Living embraces modern sensibility while evoking the Art Deco era. Gold lines on a navy blue background, the geometry of the Lines wallpaper pattern is both a throwback to the aesthetic of the 20s, with a contemporary update.

This wallpaper is part of the Ferm Living ‘Very Special Collection’ consisting of surface printed wallpapers, produced by using traditional printing techniques that date back to the early 1800s, but now in service of a new generation of non-woven wallpaper, which is easier and faster to hang.

We see this working well with any mid century modern styling, but also could be magnificent in a bedroom with some rich hues and vivid textiles.

Ready to ramp it up a little?

A bolder higher contrast pattern or picture for your wallpaper accent wall is a great way to make other kinds of artwork, furniture in saturated colors, or floral arrangements and plants really pop. Don’t worry that a pattern or bright colors will make your space too busy – because you are just working with one wall in your space, there will be plenty of places for the eye to rest. A mish-mosh of patterns, done well, actually often creates the illusion that there’s more space (and more room to have fun).

Try a lighthearted print for a great way to bring some drama or humor to spaces where you least expect it! Wallpaper accent walls in the usual suspects like powder rooms, a media room or a kids room are all great ideas, but what about in a conference room, the wall below the stairs (with a swath of family photos in a mix of vintage frames, perhaps), behind a buffet or credenza in a formal dining room or even behind some pantry shelves?

Wall murals

A wallpaper wall mural is an incredible way of using design forward artwork and style in your space. There are so many ways to do this – and none of them require actually bringing in any walls from a Brooklyn warehouse or a parlor from Versaille, or a boulevard from Mexico City. Burke Décor has a ton of options to create a visual focal point that is still practical to live with and sure to spark a lot of creative conversations. Here are a few of our faves:

Allerton House Wall Mural from the Erstwhile Collection by Milton & King

This is a beautifully tinted half tone wall mural that features a spectacular balcony view from an uptown New York City hotel. Vibrant pastel tones are sure to compliment are diverse range of interior settings.

Analog Nights Wallpaper Print in Glimmer design by Aimee Wilder

Analog Nights in Glimmer has got to be one of the most entertaining repeats ever made. It’s just so much fun in this totally delicious throwback way, but looks perfect with the most modern of furnishings in front of it.

Stargazer Wall Mural in Aurora design by York Wallcoverings

Stargazer in Aurora provides a most celestial transport to the heavens. Can you imagine how lovely it would be to wake up in the morning on some soft-as-silk sheets and gaze up at this? Followed immediately by an Americano and a croissant, of course.

The Diana Scenic wall mural by Carl Robinson

The Diana Scenic wall mural by Carl Robinson is this improbably combination of being both completely romantic and also very modern and refined. This large-scale black and white photograph captures the simplicity of a distressed bicycle wheel in a field and doesn’t swamp the room. This wall mural works really well with the wallpaper behind it, as well as the modern furnishings of the dining area.

Inspired by architectural history

Current wallpaper trends draw on some of the most interesting architectural wells of inspiration – how about a pattern that looks like photorealistic brick or concrete or wood? Or how about those tin ceilings you’ve always coveted? With just enough irregularity and scuffed-upedness to make them feel romantic and authentic, these beautiful wallpaper designs by NLXL and Merci would transform any wall they adorn.

Brooklyn Tins NLXL & Merci

In 2009, Merci selected vintage ceiling tins as a décor concept for their Parisian store. And ever since they opened they have had slews of requests to take pictures of the MERCI tin counter and visitors asking to buy it. This phenomenon led to a stunning collaboration with NLXL studio to design and market the wallpaper collection Brooklyn Tins.

Historically, tin ceilings were introduced to North America as an affordable alternative to the exquisite plasterwork used in European homes. It was between 1890 and 1930 that thin rolled tin-plates were being mass-produced. Tin ceilings were traditionally painted white to give the appearance of hand- carved or molded plaster. A renewed interest in tin ceilings has made for a pricey market to buy originals, and restoring a tin ceiling (which are often covered in lead paint) is definitely a job for an expert! A tin ceiling print for your wallpaper accent wall makes so much more sense…

Accent walls are here to stay

When accent walls (painted or wallpapered) became in vogue almost 5 years ago, many thought it was a passing trend. But they have solidified their place in the design industry’s vernacular and wallpaper accent walls are only making their role more dynamic and interesting. Plus, the movement towards open floor plans and loft-like spaces is only increasing in popularity, which means using a wallpaper accent wall to create separate spaces for eating, sleeping, lounging, working will continue to be a creative and crucial way to divide up your living area.

A little history

Wallpaper was once just a decorative option for very wealthy homes, until innovations in machine production put it within reach of more modest households. And throughout its history, wallpaper was often seen as a backdrop for furnishings (the early 19th century French scenic depictions are a notable exception here, as are Chinese wallpapers). But today wallpaper has gone way beyond its initial perception as an imitator of handcrafted artistry. To be sure, it still imitates other decorative finishes, but I’m sure that William Morris had not foreseen faux exposed brick wallpaper or photorealistic birch-wood wallpaper being used in countless breakfast nooks, or that artists would be able to create patterns of clouds and boomboxes that are both adorable and gritty, as well as durable.

Today’s wallpaper is so much more durable, easy to install, and easy to keep clean. Papers that were once used in commercial applications are now available for the masses, which means that you should not worry too much about installing your wallpaper accent wall in a high traffic area, or that children are going to destroy it (although Burke Décor always wants you to double check in our specs that the wallpaper you select for your accent wall is created with your maintenance needs in mind. And that goes double if you are installing in a bathroom or high-humidity area).

With a wallpaper accent wall, you aren’t limited to just beautiful images or designs – you can play with texture as well. Textured wallpapers make the most of historical design and architectural elements, as well as add another layer of style to an accent wall. If you aren’t ready to take the plunge into a representational image or even an abstract pattern – think about how a texture might enliven a more neutral palette for your accent wall.

Now - take a walk around your space with a nice iced coffee and start sizing up those walls. Then check back in with us to find the wallpaper that adds just the right amount of drama.
