Introduction by Patrick Seguin. Text by Catherine Coley, FranÌÄå¤oise-Claire Prodhon, Raymond Guidot, Catherine Drouin-ProuvÌÄå©.

Todaythe oeuvre of French architect and designer Jean ProuvÌÄå© is consideredessential to the history of twentieth century design. ProuvÌÄå©'sfurniture designs were determined by the interior spaces the pieceswould inhabit, and they developed in tandem with the Modernistprinciples of the "art of living" and "harmonious habitat" that were socharacteristic of the time. This exquisitely produced and comprehensivevolume, which was put together by Paris' Galerie Patrick Seguin and NewYork's Sonnabend Gallery--where ProuvÌÄå© was the subject of acritically-acclaimed 2003 solo exhibition--fills a hole in the existingscholarship, most of which focuses on ProuvÌÄå©'s architecture. Itincludes a collection of interviews with collectors and designprofessionals, a detailed biography of ProuvÌÄå© by his daughter,Catherine ProuvÌÄå©, and essays by design historian Raymond Guidot andarchitecture historian Catherine Coley.
Jean ProuvÌÄå© was bornin Paris in 1901. He opened his workshop in Nancy in 1923 and beganproducing furniture the following year. Immediately successful, ProuvÌÄå©is best known for his innovative applications of new materials, withwhich he created extremely influential buildings andfurniture--including several gas stations for Shell and Mobile. Workingwell past retirement, he died in Nancy in 1984.
