About Mayan Hands Our artisan partners in Guatemala are proud to offer you their exquisitely crafted pine needle baskets. Handmade from sustainably sourced longleaf pine needles and pajón, a native wild grass found in the Guatemalan Highlands, these heirloom-quality baskets will enhance the home with their natural beauty and texture and their subtle fragrance. Basket makers masterfully combine color, form, and fine stitches to create baskets that, while perfect for display, are entirely functional as well. An ever-expanding community is collecting these baskets, each of which bears a tag signed by the basket artist who crafted it.
Mayan Hands is a fair trade nonprofit organization partnering with about 200 talented Mayan women in the Guatemala Highlands. Though recognized worldwide as extraordinary weavers and artisans, Mayan women experience discrimination, poverty, and marginalization in their home country. However, when provided with economic and educational opportunity, our artisan partners and their families thrive. Families access better nutrition and health care, children – even the girls – attend school, and women invest in their local economies. Programs that support our artisan partners in realizing their potential as artists, businesswomen, and leaders in their communities create lasting change at home, and allow the women to share their creativity and culture with the global community.
